pennyshorts is the proud sponsor of the fourth ChipLitFest Short Story competition. All details can be found here: https://bit.ly/2NYQoHI. We are closing to new submission until Jan 2019 so we can focus on the entries. Last year, there were over 300, with a total word count of 750,000. War & Peace is a little over 500,000. A very worthwhile enterprise, but time-consuming! Here are the details:

Entry fee: £5 for stories up to 2,500 words. £8 for stories up to 5,000 words
Word Limit: 2,500 (£5) 5,000 (£8)
Deadline (Closing Date): 12 Midnight GMT, Thursday 7 February 2019
First Prize: £500
Second Prize: £100
Third Prize: £50
The authors of the top ten stories will have an opportunity to feature on www.pennyshorts.com, a website which publishes short stories of all genres. The top three stories will be published on the ChipLitFest website.
We promote and encourage quality writing from amateurs and professionals alike, so the competition is open to everyone aged 16 or over by the closing date, Thursday 7 February 2019, not only in the UK, but overseas as well.

Nicholas Royle is the author of three short story collections –Mortality, Ornithology and The Dummy & Other Uncanny Stories – and seven novels, most recently First Novel. Reader in Creative Writing at Manchester Metropolitan University, he also runs Nightjar Press and is head judge of the Manchester Fiction Prize.
